baby gates, toddler safety Toddler safety requires parents to be educated, alert and aware of possible dangers. Toddler parents are often confused about the hows and whens of child safety. The fact is it is never too early to start making needed changes to childproof your home.

The sooner you begin to look for and correct potential hazards the less likely your are to over look one.

Every environment that your baby will be exposed to will need to be modified. This means the entire house, garage or sheds, yard, pools, cars, boats etc..

Never, ever, underestimate your toddler's abilities to find and get into trouble.

REMEMBER:

PREDICT- Look for potential dangers and predict the what ifs.

PREVENT- Prevent the situation from becoming a possibility by;

PROOFING- Set up child safety barriers for your toddler

PROTECT- Protect your baby from harm by practicing proactive parenting.

Given here is a list of toddler safety tips for a number of safety hazards. Environments differ greatly so always triple check for unpredictable dangers.

One way to help make your home safe for your child is to sit on the floor at toddler eye-level and look around for possible hazards.

Remember this toddler safety tip, a toddler can figure out how to break, blow-up and otherwise destroy what man can't. So if you know it could be dangerous, it is. If you think it might be dangerous, it is. If you had no idea it could be dangerous, it is.

BY THE PHONE:

    • Place emergency phone numbers by all phones:
    • Poison Control
    • Pediatrician
    • 911
    • Information for family members like age and date of birth, medical problems such as seizures, allergies, asthma and heart problems and medication taken(you may know all this but grandma or babysitter won't).

AROUND THE HOUSE:

    • Have first aid items and fire extinguishers on hand.
    • ALL PARENTS SHOULD BE CERTIFIED IN FIRST AID,CPR AND THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER.
    • Place locks on all cabinets and doors that hold items not for baby, especially cleaning supplies, medications and where knives are stored.
    • Table clothes or runners are flags waving at your toddler asking him to "Pull me,please!"
    • Make sure your television set is anchored to a stable surface so it can't be pulled over.
    • Place straight slated screw mounted baby gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
    • Beware of floor fans and little fingers. All fans should be placed out of reach of small children.
    • Keep floors vacuumed and clean to prevent little fingers from finding little objects that end up in little mouths.

AROUND THE YARD:

    • Keep grass mowed
    • Check play equipment for insects.
    • Make sure gates are latched.
    • Check to make sure all tools are put away.
    • Check the yard for containers filled with water. Toddlers can drown in less than two inches of water.
