With the depleting ozone layer sun safety is a very real concern. Most all of us have experienced a sunburn or felt the draining effects of summer heat. That is why as parents it is our job to practice sun safety to protect our children. The effects of the sun can show immediately such as sun burn, sun tan and freckles. Others effects can take years to be come apparent like wrinkles,splotches or skin cancer. Those adorable rosy cheeks on your little one is a sign of sun damage. You may think it looks healthy but it could be risking your child's health later in his life. One blistering sun burn in childhood more than doubles a persons chance of developing melanoma later in life. You can't keep your baby indoors all the time nor should your want to. Babies need fresh air and light to grow. So below are listed some common sense easy to follow suggestions for sun protection.
Sun Safety Tips For Babies and Toddlers
- Always use your baby stroller's or carrier's sun shade.
- Tent on car windows can make a huge difference in filtering the suns damaging rays and cut down on heat.
- Babies under the age of 6 months should avoid any sun exposure.
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun between the times of 10:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M.
- Use a canopy or tent as cover when playing in areas with no available shade or cover.
- Insist that your baby wear a wide brim hat or bonnet when out doors. This begins life long safety habits.
- Introduce your baby or toddler to sunglasses so that he become used to wearing them

- Have your baby wear sunscreen when ever they are out doors not just when playing in the water.
- Choose sunscreen that is SPF 15 or higher.
- Put a small amount of the sunscreen on your baby's wrist to see if it will irritate his screen.
- Creams or lotions are less drying to tender skin.
- Sunscreen should not be placed on babies under 6 months.
- Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors.
- Apply sunscreen over all exposed skin including ears,nose, lips and around eyes. Make sure you rub sunscreen in.
- Sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours more if your baby is playing in the water or sweating.
- Never use baby oil on your baby when going outdoors. The oil actually makes it easier for UV rays to penetrate baby's tender skin.
