Suffocation Prevention Tips

Suffocation and strangulation accidents happen every year to toddlers. Most often these accidents occur in the child's home. Here are practical common sense things parent's can do to help prevent these senseless tragedies.

    • Keep all plastic away from small children. This includes grocery and garbage bags.
    • Never use plastic to protect a mattress.
    • Make sure that toy chests have child safe hinges to prevent the lid from closing on the child.
    • Never place a baby on a bean bag chair, water bed or other soft surface. A baby can roll over onto his side or stomach and not be able to clear his face.
    • Babies should not be put in bed with other children or pets.
    • Crib mattresses should be flat and firm to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Make sure you remove all soft bedding, pillows, heavy covers and stuffed animals when placing your baby in bed.
    • Crib mattresses should fit tightly. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib the mattress is too small.
    • Bumper pads should fit around the entire crib tie or snap into place at each corner, the top and bottom and in the middle of each long side. Remove the pad when your baby can pull to a standing position.
    • Automatic garage doors have come down and crushed small children in the past. Most doors now have a anti-crush device installed to help prevent this from happening but older devices may not so check yours.

Strangulation PreventionTips

    • Never place a baby crib, child's bed or furniture near window blinds or drapery. Children can become entangled in the control cords and strangle. Childproof all window cords by rolling the cords and tying them out of reach.
    • NEVER tie pacifiers or teething toys around your babies neck. Remove bibs and necklaces whenever you put your baby in bed.
    • Keep electrical cords tied up and tucked out of reach.
    • Do not use clothing with draw strings or ties.
    • Watch for toys with strings or cords.
    • NEVER tie toys across or over baby cribs or playpens.
    • Make sure you pull the side of cribs and mesh play pens into the upright positions. Small babies have been known to roll into the collected material and suffocate.
    • Always secure your baby with safety straps when in seats and strollers to prevent them from wiggling down and wedging their heads in the leg holes.
