Poisoning is the most preventable of all childhood unintentional accidents or deaths. Every year in the United States it is estimated that 130 children become victims to accidental ingestion of harmful substances. - Read medication labels and give only prescribed amount.
- Never call medication "candy".
- Always return medication to a locked safe storage place.
- Keep purses out of the reach of little hands.
- Never take medication in front of your toddler.
- Discard all old medications.
- Place child safety locks on all cabinet and draws.
- Place all medications, cleaning supplies, pesticides and other hazardous materials in child safe locked containers.
- When using hazardous materials never leave your child alone with containers.
- Soaps, salt, baby oils and powders can be a potential hazard be careful with how you handle these.
- Lead paint and pipes still can exist in homes built before 1978. Make sure that your home is free from lead.
- Use Carbon monoxide detectors if you gas appliances.
- Many plants can be hazardous if eaten. Check both the plants inside your home as well in your yard.
- Check outside toys for spiders,ants and wasps every time your toddler plays with them.
- Keep grass mowed to help discourage nest building from biting insects or the intrusion of reptiles.
- Never leave vehicles running in a closed garage to prevent carbon monoxide build up.
- Teach your child safety rules for hazardous materials.
