Pet Safety for Parents of Young Children
Loading
As a parent I believe it is important to teach young children pet safety. I love animals and am raising my son to do so also.Animals can give a wealth of gifts to children. They can teach a child to have patience, compassion, empathy and responsibility. Of course they also teach love. My family now has animals as part of our family. I also have use pets in my therapy practice. So I naturally support any parent who wants to introduce pets into their family and into their child's life but please research and choose your pet wisely. - Always consider your ability to give time to train and care for your pet. Know that the pet maybe for your toddler's benefit but it's really yours.
- Choose a pet that fits into your home ,yard and life.
- Know that a puppy or kitten can cause unintentional injury with nails and teeth. Help your child learn how to play with the new pet.
- If you have a pet before your baby is born make sure that your new pet is introduced to the new baby and monitored for sign of aggressive behavior.
- It is usually recommended that a new pet not be introduced into your home until your toddler is at least 3 years old.
- If your child is allergic to pet hair ask your doctor about a poodle or Labor-poodle cross. I hear these dogs do not shed and many kids with allergies can tolerate them.
- Most families have dogs. They are the number one pet choice of American families. Please make sure you choose a dog that had a reputation for being family friendly
