Childhood Burns Prevention:

Tips and Advice

Loading

fire safety, toddler safety, childproof It is estimated that each year 40,000 children suffer burns. Being an occupational therapist, I have encountered a number of children who have suffered from these painful accidents.

There are simple easy to implement safety steps to help protect your toddler from harm. Please set in place safeguards to prevent these horrible life altering accidents.

    • Turn down your hot water heaters 120 degrees Fahrenheit or less. Install anti-scald devices on faucets.
    • Use the back elements of your stove and make sure pot handles are turned toward the back. A baby gate to keep toddlers out of the kitchen is a great idea.
    • Never leave matches or lighters out where children can reach them.
    • Candles attract children like moths to a flame. If you use candles place them up out of reach.
    • Never leave your child alone with a lit fire place, wood stove, grill or other heating device.
    • When using fire outside make sure young children are supervised carefully. Also note that coals on the bottom can smolder for days and still be dangerous.
    • Motors and exhaust pipes from lawn equipment or cars are very hot. Monitor your children around them at all times.
    • Have a fire extinguisher available.
    • Install smoke detectors in all bedrooms and hallways.
    • Fire works cause accidents every year. Celebrate with common sense and caution.
    • Christmas tree fires still happen every with the improved lights. Make sure you use safe light for decorations and turn them off when you are not enjoying them.
    • Overexposure to the sun is a very real concern for child safety. A blistering sunburn at an early age can lead to skin cancer later in life Sun Safety .
    • No amount of childproofing can completely keep a child safe. And nothing replaces adult supervision.
