Baby Teeth: Care Advice for Parents

Loading

baby teeth care, toothbrush, dental health The care of baby teeth is as important as taking your baby for his immunizations. You should begin to care for your baby's oral health even before you see his first tooth. Tips for how to give your baby good oral care are listed here.

    • Wipe your baby's gums with a warm wet cloth or gauze to remove any left over formula.
    • When your baby's first tooth appears you can start using a soft infant tooth brush. Do not use paste at this point.
    • Never put your baby to bed with a bottle. This can cause infantile tooth decay (bottle rot). Protecting baby teeth is important for your baby's ability to eat and speak and permanent teeth placement.
    • Avoid giving your baby sugary drinks like soda, juices and sweet tea.
    • Give your baby water after meals to help rinse his mouth of residual formula and foods.
    • When your baby reaches approximately 18 months you can introduce non-fluoride paste on a soft brush.
    • Most public water systems add fluoride but if your home uses well or bottled water ask your pediatrician about fluoride supplements.
    • First dental exams usually are scheduled around the age of 3 years old. If your child's teeth are chipped, discolored, pitted or has cavities scheduled an appoint right away.
    • Set good routines and examples by brushing 3 times a day with your baby.
