Baby Sunglasses are
an Important Part of Sun Safety

Loading

baby sunglasses, babyshades.sun safety Baby sunglasses are an important part of a sun safety plan for your baby. In fact, this habit can set the stage for protecting his eye health for life.

Children under the age of 10 are at a greater risk for damage from the sun to the eyes and the delicate skin that surrounds them. Until the age of 10 the lens of your baby eyes is clear and allows greater penetration of UV rays.

The earlier your baby's eyes are exposed to UV rays the greater the risk of him developing eye diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration and cancers.

Choosing quality eye protection for your baby can help protect your baby's eyes and the delicate skin around them.

  • Babies younger than 6 months should be shielded from the sun completely.
  • Babies as young as 6 months should start wearing eye protection.
  • Choose glasses designed for young children. They should have flexible frames and plastic lenses.
  • If your baby already wears corrective glasses you can get a tinted pair.
  • Quality lenses should block 99-100 percent of UV rays.
  • Make sure the manufacture indicates the amount of protection provided by the lenses on the tag. If it is not listed don't buy them!
  • The more skin covered the better the protection. Look for large lenses and wrap around styles.
  • Take your baby with you and let them help pick them out. Your baby is much more likely to want to wear them if he helped pick them out.
  • Check for scratched lenses or broken or stretched frames.
  • Fit the glasses to your child. Glasses that don't fit right will irritate your baby and he won't wear them.
  • Sunglasses are only one piece of a sound sun safety plan. Combine these with the use of wide brim hat, sun screen, shade and good judgment.
  • Wearing eye protection from damaging UV rays is the same as wearing a seat belt. Teach your baby to protect his health.
